Educators experienced the ultimate GPS hands-on workshop at the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie Area.
Educators learned what GPS is all about, how the device operates, where it is used in real-world, and why it is important in the real world of education. Educators also had the chance to try out different types of GPS units.
A demonstration of how GPS data can be downloaded, stored and mapped was also shown. Teachers also saw how GPS data can be mapped as a layer in a GIS application using ArcView.
The Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie was established in 1996 and is the first national tallgrass prairie in the country. Midewin is part of the former Joliet Army Ammunition Plant, Midewin remained largely closed to the public while the Army cleaned up contamination remaining from decades of TNT manufacturing and packaging.
